The Mercy College women's basketball team (3-10; 1-7 East Coast Conference) dropped a 72-63 decision at C.W. Post (7-6; 5-3 ECC) on Thursday, despite 16 points from senior Ashley Borofsky (Southington, Conn./Southington).

The game was originally to have been played yesterday, but was moved because of the significant snow fall in the area.

Mercy jumping out to an early 6-0 lead on baskets from sophomore Aysha Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), junior Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md./Lackey), and Borofsky. After a pair of Pioneer free throws, Mercy scored the next five points, building an 11-2 lead over the first four and a half minutes of play.

C.W. Post would rally, cutting the Maverick lead to 13-12 with 12:09 to play on a Felicia Joyner jumper.  Mercy built the lead back to five, only to have C.W. Post tie the game at 17 at the 9:28 mark.

Minutes later, with the lead tied at 20, the Pioneers went on a 5-0 run, and eventually led by six at the half, 35-29.

In the second half, Mercy again came out hot, and cut the lead to just two points at 35-33. But an 8-0 run for C.W. Post quickly put the lead into double digits. Midway through the half, the lead had swelled to as many as 14, at 53-39, with 11:44 to go.

Mercy would rally with a 12-2 run, getting six points from Borofsky, to trim the lead to just four points with eight minutes to play. C. W. Post responded with its own run, jumping the lead back to 14 at 68-53 with 2:26 to play.

Once again, Mercy had its back to the wall, and managed to cut the lead to just eight at 68-60 with 55 seconds to go. Alyssa Lombardi made four free throws down the stretch for the Pioneers, and C.W. Post held on for the 72-63 win.

Borofsky led Mercy with 16, followed by Aysha Williams with 13 and Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) with 11. C.W. Post's Janea Aiken led all scorers with 19 points, of which 13 came from the free throw line.

Mercy's defense kept the Mavericks in the game, forcing 32 Pioneer turnovers.

Earlier in the season, C.W. Post beat Mercy 61-58. The teams will meet again in early February.

Mercy returns to action on Saturday, January 15, hosting the University of Bridgeport at 1:00 p.m.
