Mavericks top Bridgeport, 75-71
The Mercy College women's basketball team defeated the
University of Bridgeport this afternoon in an East Coast Conference
matchup in Dobbs Ferry, 75-71. The Mavericks, winning two of
their last three outings, are now 4-10, including 2-7 ECC.
The Purple Knights are now 6-10, including 4-5 in the ECC.
With the win today, the Mavericks have matched their win total
from last season.
Play was tight to start the first half, with the teams
exchanging baskets. A three-pointer by Aysha
Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y./New
Rochelle) brought the score to 20-19 and
the Mavericks within one. The Purple Knights then went on a
12-2 run, to take the 11 point lead. Mercy would go into the
half trailing 40-33.
Mercy came out strong in the second half. A three pointer
by Ashley Borofsky (Southington,
Conn./Southington) gave the Mavericks the 52-51
lead. Baskets would continue to be exchanged, with play tight
throughout the half. Jasmine
Williams (Stratford, Conn./Green Farms Academy) would
score 12 of the Mavericks' final 16 points, to give Mercy the
push to edge Bridgeport, 75-71.
Jasmine Williams led all players with 24 points. Borofsky
had 20 points, Simone
Williams (Waldorf, Md./Lackey) had 12 points, and
Aysha Williams added ten points. For the Purple Knights, Edna
Marant had 20 points, followed by Julia Colley with 19 points.
Mercy returns to action on Wed., Jan. 19 when the Mavericks host
Queens in a doubleheader. Tip off for the women's game
is at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
