Mercy Men's Basketball Falls to Queens 80-62
The Mercy College men's basketball team held tough, but
finally succumbed to Queens College 80-62 on Wednesday night.
Queens, who sits atop the East Coast Conference, is now 11-4 on the
season, and 8-2 in the ECC, while Mercy is 0-15, 0-10 ECC.
After Queens scored the game's first points on a Khalil
McDonald layup, Mercy responded with back-to-back baskets by
sophomore LeBrandon Smith (Jamaica, N.Y./Archbishop
Molloy) and senior Manny
Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman). A free throw
by junior Kortney
Parker (Mt. Vernon, N.Y./Mt. Vernon) gave Mercy a
four-point lead at 7-3 with 16:41 left in the first half. A minute
later, Garcia would hit a three-pointer to build a five-point lead
at 10-5. A 15-2 Queens run would give the Knights a 20-12 lead at
the 10:41 mark.
But the Mavericks came roaring back. After Queens built the lead
up to nine points, to lead 25-16, Mercy scored seven straight
points, punctuated by five consecutive points for freshman
Chaz Morrish (Douglaston, N.Y./St.
Mary's).
With the lead now just two points at 25-23, Queens would go on a
9-0 run, which was part of a larger 15-2 run, to cement the game.
Queens would lead by 17 at the half, 45-28. The Knights led by as
many as 26 points in the second half.
For the game, all five Queens starters scored in double figures,
led by McDonald. His 19 points was matched by Mercy senior
Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlan).
Mercy returns to action on Saturday, January 22, at St. Thomas
Aquinas at 3:00 p.m.
