Men's Basketball Falls to NYIT 100-87
The Mercy College men's basketball team had no magic
tonight, and lost to NYIT, 100-87, in East Coast Conference play.
NYIT remains in fifth place in the ECC with a 5-8 mark (7-10
overall), while Mercy stays winless and in eighth place at 0-12
(0-17 overall).
It was a year ago, when NYIT came to Dobbs Ferry, that Mercy
claimed its only win of the last three seasons, 89-88.
Today, NYIT got out to an early lead, only to have Mercy tie the
game at nine points each on a three-pointer by sophomore
Colin Senior (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack).
Freshman Kirk Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./St.
Mary's) then dunked home a pass from senior
Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlan), and
Mercy had an 11-9 lead. Minutes later, the Mavericks built a
four-point lead at 20-16 when sophomore LeBrandon Smith (Jamaica, N.Y./Archbishop
Molloy) hit a jumper.
NYIT then went on a 15-2 run, and the Bears held a 31-22 lead.
The lead swelled to as many as 11 in the first half, and settled at
seven, 54-47, after 12 minutes of play.
In the second stanza, Mercy chipped away at the lead, and was
able to get within four at 79-75 with 8:34 to play. But the Bears
were too much, winning by 13, 100-87.
For the game, Mercy was led by Senior, who had 24 points and
five rebounds. Wilson was right there as well, hitting for 22
points, five rebounds, six assists, and four steals. NYIT had
six players in double figures in scoring, led by Kayvon Roberts,
who had 20.
Mercy returns to action on Monday, Jan. 31, at Molloy.
