Maverick Rally Falls Short, Men's Basketball Falls at Molloy 82-77
The Mercy College men's basketball rallied from an
18-point second half deficit but fell short, losing at Molloy
College 82-77 in East Coast Conference action on Monday night. The
Mavericks got to within three points with four seconds to go, but
could not overcome the hosts.
Mercy (0-18; 0-13 ECC) trailed 72-58 with 5:46 remaining in
regulation when the final charge was mounted. Mercy went on an 8-0
run, spurred by two baskets by senior Ed
Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlan). Molloy's
Chris Lyons ended the streak, and Molloy led by eight, 74-66, with
3:04 to go.
Molloy (7-11; 7-6 ECC) extended the lead to 76-69 before
the
Mercy defense really stiffened. From the 2:20 mark until there
were just 29 ticks left, Molloy was held scoreless. Meanwhile
junior James Mindingall (Randolph,
N.J./Randolph) made a layup, followed by points from
Wilson. After a pair of Molloy free throws, Mindingall once again
made a layup, and with just 22 seconds remaining, Mercy trailed
78-75.
Mercy would get no closer, as Molloy made its free throws down
the stretch to hold on for the 82-77 victory.
On the night, senior Manny Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal
Spellman) led Mercy with 18 points, followed by Wilson
with 15 and Mindingall with 11. Molloy was paced by Daniel Concha,
who had a game-high 19, including making seven of nine free
throws.
Mercy remains on the road, playing at Dowling on Wednesday,
February 2.
