Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaking 58-56 Loss to Molloy
Despite 16-point performances from senior Ashley Borofsky and
junior Simone Williams, the Mercy College women's basketball
team could not hold a late lead, and lost an East Coast Conference
game to visiting Molloy College 58-56.
With just 3:15 to go in the contest, the score was tied at 50
points apiece. Sophomore Aysha
Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y./STAC) made a pair of free
throws to give Mercy a tenuous two-point lead with 2:53 to play.
Molloy's Ashley Addison responded with a three-pointer as the
Lions then took a one-point lead.
Next, Simone Williams (Waldorf,
Md./Lackey) made
back-to-back jumpers for Mercy (2-9, 0-6 ECC), as the Mavericks
took a 56-53 lead with just 97 seconds to play. They were the last
points Mercy would score.
Molloy (3-9, 3-2 ECC) would score the final five points of the
game, and claim the 58-56 win.
The Lions dominated the boards, grabbing 50 rebounds to
Mercy's 39.
Borofsky (Southington,
Conn./Southington) scored all of her 16 points in the
first half, as the Mavericks took a 31-24 lead into the break.
Mercy returns to action on Saturday, January 10, travelling to
NYIT.
