EASTON, MASS. (Oct. 12, 2011) – On Wednesday afternoon the Mercy College men's soccer team took to the field against Stonehill College in Easton, Mass. looking to get a confidence boost ahead of this weekend' game against undefeated No. 3 C.W. Post.  The Mavericks looked well on their way to the win early, but a brace from senior forward Michael White (Lisbon, N.H.) lifted the Skyhawks to victory, handing Mercy its fifth straight loss.

Mercy drops below .500 for the first time this year with a 5-6-1 overall record, while Stonehill climbs above the mark at 7-6.

Mercy came out firing early in the first half, ripping eight shots before Stonehill managed its first effort in the 26th minute.  Junior midfielder Mubarak Sani (Bronx, N.Y.) and junior forward Ernest Afful (Accra, Ghana) led the charge, taking three shots with one on goal apiece.  Freshman midfielder Daniel Leon (Flushing, N.Y.) nearly gave the Mavericks the edge but his effort smacked the crossbar in the 24th minute.

The Skyhawks eventually clawed their way back into the game and controlled play by the end of the first half.  They took their momentum into the second and in the 69th minute White struck for his first goal, finishing a flick on by sophomore midfielder Kevin Gilmartin (Pompton Plains, N.J.) following a long pass at midfield from junior midfielder Anthony Campagnano (Schenectady, N.Y.).

Mercy fought desperately for an equalizer but could not find it, and White snuck a late insurance goal in at the 88th minute to seal the match.

Afful and Sani each registered four shots to lead the match, but all three of the Mavericks' efforts were stopped by freshman goalkeeper Adam Colella (Wilmington, Mass.), while junior goalkeeper Nick Papas (Castleton, N.Y.) made two saves on Mercy's end.

Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks (5-6-1, 1-3 in the ECC) will face C.W. Post (11-0-0, 3-0) in an attempt to jump back into the playoff race on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on long Island.
