Women's Soccer Outlasts Bloomfield for the Win, 3-2

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 13, 2011) – On Thursday afternoon the Mercy College women's soccer team hosted Bloomfield College looking to break a three-match losing streak. Behind some lineup changes at halftime, the Mavericks did just that, outlasting the Deacons 3-2.
Mercy improves to 3-10 with the win, while Bloomfield drops to 2-10.
The first half started slow as both teams tried to find their footing on a sloppy field due to light rain all morning and afternoon. Mercy held the edge in the half, cracking nine shots (two on goal) and denying the Deacons any efforts on goal. Freshman forward Chaz'ani Douglas (East Hartford, Conn.) found herself in front of the net twice early on but could not manage a clear shot, and several chances on crosses later in the half could not find their targets. The Deacons' best opportunity came when sophomore Caitlin McKenna (Massapequa park, N.Y.), filling in as goalkeeper, picked up a back-pass from a teammate, resulting in an indirect free kick that Bloomfield sent wide.
Several players shifted positions at halftime and the moves paid off quickly as sophomore midfielder Alison Mrowinski (Syracuse, N.Y.) slotted home a loose ball in the box off a free kick and senior back Caitlin Wilson (West Windsor, N.J.), moved up top, saw her intense hustle pay off with the Mavericks' second goal in the 56th minute on a long through ball from graduate student back Andre Nash (Somers, N.Y.).
The Deacons pulled one back in the 66th minute, however, as sophomore defender Mikie Bradley (Jackson, N.J.) smashed a free kick from 40 yards out that bounced off McKenna's hands and into the net. The Mavericks responded almost instantly, however, as Douglas finally connected on a shot as she headed a corner kick by senior back Jackie Sabel (Pewaukee, Wis.) past freshman goalkeeper Katrina Guevara (North Plainfield, N.J.) for the eventual game-winner.
The Deacons had many chances to equalize over the final 20 minutes, eventually picking up another goal in the 82nd when senior forward Christine Rutherford (North Arlington, N.J.) ran past her defender and smashed a shot by McKenna. The final minutes were anything but relaxing for Mercy as Bloomfield peppered the net with shots and sent through balls and crosses all over the box but a few key saves by McKenna and a last-minute free kick that went high sealed the match for the Mavericks.
McKenna made three saves in her fill-in appearance to earn the victory, while Guevara made four saves while allowing three goals.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks (3-10 overall, 1-4 in the ECC) will head to C.W. Post (6-4, 2-2) on Saturday to play the first match of a doubleheader with the men's squads at 12:00 p.m.
