Women's Soccer Blanked by Georgian Court, 2-0
Box Score BOXSCORE - Mercy vs. Georgian Court
LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Oct. 20, 2011) – On Thursday afternoon, the Mercy College women's soccer squad traveled down to Lakewood, N.J. to take on Georgian Court University looking to get back on the winning track after dropping a tight match to C.W. Post on Saturday. The Lions, however, denied the Mavericks that opportunity as Georgian Court was victorious, 2-0.
Georgian Court (8-7 overall) scored its first goal in the 36th minute as senior forward Candace Seaton (Bellport, N.Y.) found the back of the netting off a pass from junior midfielder Becky Witmer (Jackson, N.J.). The Lions took this 1-0 lead into the intermission.
The Lions notched an insurance goal in the 47th minute when rookie back Rachael Tremblay (Manalapan, N.J.) scored off a feed from redshirt-sophomore midfielder Farrell Pomponio (Tuckerton, N.J.). Those two goals would be all Georgian Court needed as senior goalkeeper Shealyn Sullivan (Buffalo, N.Y.) made six saves between the pipes.
In goal for Mercy (3-12 overall), freshman goalie Krystal Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.) stopped two shots in the loss. Her sister, fellow freshman Ashley Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.) fired six shots on the day.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks return to the field next Thursday (Oct. 27) when they host Nyack College at 3:00 p.m. The game will also serve as Senior Day as the team honors its five graduating Mavericks: Jackie Sabel, Jamie Sabel, Caitlin Wilson, Julia Camp and Dana Harjus.
