OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Oct. 20, 2011) – On Thursday night the Mercy College volleyball team headed out to Long Island for a rematch with NYIT, which had been victorious in three sets in the Mavericks' first East Coast Conference match of the season back in September.  The match ended with the same result as the Bears swept the Mavericks for their eighth ECC victory and the Mavericks' seventh straight loss.

NYIT's record improves to 15-6 overall and 8-2 in the ECC, while Mercy's record falls to 7-18 (2-5).

There was more at stake than just the result, however.  This was just as much a battle between freshman outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) and sophomore outside hitter Shelby Cable (DeSoto, Mo.), ranked eighth and fourth in the nation, respectively, in kills-per-set, and White came away victorious with an astounding match-high 19 kills to raise her average to 4.59 per set.  She also added 12 digs for her 10th double-double of the year.

The Mavericks tried to set the tone early with a White kill and Cable error giving Mercy the opening two points, but NYIT slowly edged Mercy by a few points to take the set, 25-21.  The second game held tight with several lead changes until NYIT broke a 13-13 tie with a four-point run and held the advantage to the end, getting the final three points of the set for a 25-19 victory.

The Bears jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the third set and in trying to fight their way back into the match, the Mavericks committed several errors to give NYIT a 12-2 run to end the match with the sweep.

Cable led the Bears with 12 kills, while senior setter Damla Albayrak (Istanbul, Turkey) made 32 assists and senior libero Lisa Peacock (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) posted 15 digs.  Sophomore middle blocker Kelly Brown (Queens Village, N.Y.) contributed 4.0 total blocks as well.  Freshmen setters McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) and Michala Askew (Ringgold, Ga.) combined to make 28 assists for the Mavericks.

Head Coach Alan Clements and the Mavericks will host a tri-match this Saturday including an ECC faceoff with the University of the District of Columbia (9-16, 1-7) at 12:00 p.m. and a rematch with Assumption College (6-18), which swept the Mavericks last weekend, at 4:00 p.m.
