BOXSCORE – Mercy vs. Molloy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2011) – On Sunday afternoon the Mercy College men's soccer team celebrated its Senior Day, honoring seven graduating seniors before their match with the Lions.  The Mavericks were unlucky not to send them off in style, cracking 18 shots to the Lions' 14 and forcing seven corners to no avail as they fell 3-0.  Mercy was more than unlucky not to find the net thanks in part to several brilliant saves by redshirt freshman goalkeeper Justin Corke (Valley Stream, N.Y.), who made six in total.

The loss drops Mercy's record to 5-9-1 overall (1-5 in the ECC), while Molloy improves to 2-13-1 (1-4-1).

Mercy nearly got on the board first on several occasions, including two clear chances for senior forward Colin Legge (Schodack, N.Y.) with an open net that he dribbled around on before failing to put it on target.  The Lions responded shortly after, as junior forward Tyler De La Torre (Valley Stream, N.Y.) ran onto Corke's untouched punt and slotted it past junior goalkeeper Nick Papas (Castleton, N.Y.) to the far post for the 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.

The Lions picked up another goal just before halftime, as sophomore midfielder Dan Brown (Queens, N.Y.) fired a shot past Papas from 10 yards out to stretch the lead to two.  The second half saw little action until a slew of yellow cards were show as the game got a bit out of hand, as four Mavericks and two Lions were booked for dissent over the next 10 minutes.

The Lions put one more goal in just before the 78th minute, as Brown rolled a pass to freshman back Joey Pinto (Lynbrook, N.Y.), who shot through traffic from 12 yards out for the insurance score.  Legge had one last chance amid a flurry of off-target shots to put the Mavericks on the score sheet as he stepped up to take a late penalty kick, but sent it high and wide.

Papas ended the day with five saves, including some impressive stops on well-struck volleys and long crosses.

Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will host Philadelphia University on Wednesday in their penultimate game and final match at Mavericks Field this season.  Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m.
