Women's Soccer Loses to Dowling in Season Finale, 7-1

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2011) – On Saturday afternoon, the Mercy College women's soccer team ended the 2011 season with a 7-1 defeat at the hands of East Coast Conference-nemesis Dowling College. With the win, the Golden Lions improved to 12-5-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the league. Following the loss, the Mavericks dropped to 3-13 on the year and 1-6 in the ECC.
Dowling scored five unanswered goals in the first stanza as Mercy could not get anything going offensively and had trouble in the backfield. Coming out of the intermission, Mercy freshman forward Ashley Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.) netted her first collegiate goal in the 52nd minute to cut the Mavericks' deficit to 5-1. Sophomore back Caitlin McKenna (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) had the assist.
The Golden Lions notched two extra tallies as they went on to secure the win. In net for Mercy, freshman goalkeeper Krystal Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.) stopped 11 shots.
