BOXSCORE - Mercy vs. Molloy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2011) – On Thursday afternoon, the Mercy College women's soccer squad squared off against East Coast Conference-opponent Molloy College looking to even up its league ledger at 2-2. The Mavericks were close on many late-game shots, but in the end came up short as the Lions won, 2-1. With the win, Molloy improved to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference. With the loss, Mercy fell to 2-9 on the season (1-3 ECC).

Molloy drew blood first when sophomore midfielder Allison Sloper (Williston Park, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal in the 12th minute of play. With the Mercy goalkeeper jumping out to grab the ball, Sloper found it after the keeper's misjudgment and shot it into the open net from a few yards out.

The Mavericks played tough the rest of the first half and didn't allow another goal through halftime. After the intermission, the Lions struck again for an insurance tally when senior midfielder Nicole Reverberi (Massapequa, N.Y.) lined up for a corner kick and hooked it in from the red flag. With 29 minutes left in regulation, Molloy led, 2-0.

In the 79th minute, a Molloy player committed a foul. While the Lions' players were debating the call with the referee, Mercy graduate student midfielder Andrea Nash (Somers, N.Y.) lined up her free kick and belted it into the back of the netting. Molloy rookie goalkeeper Nicole DellaPorta (West Babylon, N.Y.) didn't move as the ball hit inside the goal to her right. Mercy cut its deficit to 2-1.

The Mavericks fired many more chances on goal, but could not find the equalizer. Nash finished with three shots on goal, while freshman forward Ashley Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.) had four shots on goal. Mercy's midfield did a terrific job with through-balls and cross passes, but the attacking portion of the Mavericks' offense could not put it past DellaPorta.

Between the pipes for Mercy, freshman Krystal Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.) made four saves, while DellaPorta stopped nine shots for the Lions, earning the victory.

Mercy held the edge in shots, doubling up Molloy, 15-7.

Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and his club return to action on Saturday when they travel to Old Westbury, N.Y. to faceoff against another ECC-opponent in the New York Institute of Technology. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m.
