Field Hockey Earns First Victory in Program History with Impressive Showing Against Elms, 5-1
Box Score CHICOPEE, Mass. (Oct. 7, 2011) - Friday evening played host to Mercy College Athletics history as the Mavericks' field hockey squad earned its first win in program history over Elms College, 5-1 at Leary Field in Chicopee, Mass. Rookie midfielder/forward Giana Magosin (West Atlantic City, N.J.) helped the Mavericks to victory with a pair of goals.
Magosin kicked off the scoring with a goal in the 8th minute of play. She was fed the ball by freshman defender Danielle Jones (Shrewsbury, Mass.) following a penalty corner.
Elms evened up the score at 1-1 when Meghan Goodrow netted a goal in the 18th minute. However, Mercy was able to get the lead back before halftime struck as freshman forward Yolie Nyero (Carlisle, Pa.) found the back of the netting at 24:13. The marker was unassisted.
Up 2-1 coming out of the intermission, the Mavericks padded their lead as the desire to bring home Mercy's first-ever win in program history was in the front of the players' minds. Rookie forward Marissa Kluber (Wading River, N.Y.) scored in the 53rd minute off a rebound to make it 3-1. Then Magosin fired it past the Elms goalkeeper for her second tally of the day (57:53). Freshman midfielder Andrea Licostie (Lake Grove, N.Y.) had the assist.
Mercy capped off its stellar day when Licostie put the fifth goal between the pipes in the 66th minute.
All of the team's hard work, dedication and motivation paid off as the Mavericks were rewarded earning their first win in Year 2 of the program.
Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and her club can now look for win #2 as they host Ramapo College on Saturday, October 8 at 4:30 p.m. The game will be played at Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y.
