Early NYIT Goal Downs Men's Soccer, 1-0
Box Score OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2011) – On Saturday afternoon the Mercy College men's soccer team traveled to NYIT, ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA East Region, looking to bounce back from a tough loss to St. Thomas Aquinas College the week prior. Unfortunately for the Mavericks, an early Bears goal proved to be enough to decide the match, and Mercy was sent home with another heartbreaking loss.
Mercy falls to 5-4-1 overall (1-2 in the ECC) while NYIT improves to 8-2-1 (2-1).
Both sides pressed the attack early, but it was NYIT's that paid off in the 11th minute when senior back Pierre Sy (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) collected a cross from sophomore forward Matthew DiDonna (West Islip, N.Y.) and slotted it in for the go-ahead score.
Mercy fought back but could not create enough opportunities to find an equalizer, taking only six shots to NYIT's 13 but holding the edge in corners, 6-2.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Papas (Castleton, N.Y.) made six saves in the match while Mercy's only effort against freshman goalkeeper Liam Waddy (Northampton, England) was taken by junior forward William Koki (Aurora, Colo.).
Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will look to rebound on Monday as they host Queens College (5-5-2, 2-0-1) in another conference matchup at 3:30 p.m.
