Brenna White No. 1 Across All NCAA Divisions
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 1, 2011) – Freshman outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) of the Mercy College volleyball team leads all NCAA divisions in kills this season, with 562. The NCAA released its weekly statistical rankings late Monday night, in which White ranked No. 1 in the entire nation in total kills, No. 3 in Division II in kills-per-set. Her 4.76 average leads the East Coast Conference and ranks first among all freshmen in the nation as well.
White is expected to set the Division II record for kills in a season since scoring changed from 30-point sets to 25-point sets in 2008, as no player has topped 600 kills since. No freshman has ever led the entire NCAA in total kills (three have led their division but ranked No. 2 overall - two in Division II in 1999 and 2000 and one in Division III in 2004).
White was also named to the ECC Player of the Week Honor Roll for the third time on Monday. He was also named Co-Rookie of the Week for Week Six. She totaled 86 kills and 36 digs over four matches this week, posting her 14th double-double of the season.
White smashed her 500th kill of the season in the first set against C.W. Post on Thursday, becoming the first of only three players across all NCAA divisions to reach 500 for the season. In doing so, she also posted just the ninth 500-kill season in Mavericks history and is on pace to become just the third Maverick to top 600 kills in a season. Her 562 kills currently rank third all-time thanks to 13 20-kill matches, including two with a career-high 27.
The Mavericks are vastly improved over recent years, having earned their first two wins in ECC play in three years despite relying heavily on a rotation that includes five freshmen, two sophomores and just one senior.
Head Coach Alan Clements will lead White and the rest of the Mavericks (8-23 overall, 2-8) against Queens College (7-17, 2-9) tonight in Queens at 7:00 p.m.
