Women's Basketball Edged Out By Southern New Hampshire, 72-53
BOXSCORE – Mercy vs. Southern New Hampshire
MANCHESTER, N.H. (Nov. 12, 2011) – On Saturday afternoon the Mercy College women's basketball team took on Southern New Hampshire University in the second slate of Northeast-10 – ECC Conference Challenge games looking to bounce back from yesterday's loss. Although the Mavericks kept close through the first half, the Penmen pulled away in the second to post the 72-53 victory.
Southern New Hampshire improved its record to 2-0 with the win, while Mercy drops to 0-2 to start the year.
No Maverick stepped up to shoulder the scoring load for the second time, with five scoring between eight and 10 points for the second straight day as the team again shot below 40 percent from the field. There were certainly some positives, however, as senior forward Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn.) grabbed an impressive 16 rebounds and junior wing Jessica Biggs (Nanuet, N.Y.) hit all three of her three-point attempts. The Mavericks outrebounded the Penmen, but ball movement and control were problems, as they recorded just six assists against 20 turnovers.
A pair of new faces led the scoring for Mercy today, as sophomore guard Maria Nardulli (Staten Island, N.Y.) and senior forward Talia Beaulieu (Waldorf, Md.) each netted 10 points after Biggs and junior forward MarQuesha Moore (Bryans Road, Md.), who scored eight and nine, respectively, led the team in yesterday's game. Beaulieu just missed a double-double with nine rebounds and added a team-high four steals.
Junior forward Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) led the Penmen with 17 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore forward Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) also dropped 17 points and junior guard Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) hit four threes in totaling 16 points. Senior point guard Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) dished out eight assists and was one of six Penmen with two steals.
Head Coach Kelli Dunlay and the Mavericks will return to Dobbs Ferry for their home opener on Saturday, when they will host Philadelphia University (1-0) at 1:00 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team.
