Jasmine Williams Posts Triple-Double in Close Loss to Philadelphia

BOXSCORE – Mercy vs. Philadelphia

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 19, 2011) – On Saturday afternoon the Mercy College women's basketball team hosted Philadelphia University in a home-opening doubleheader with the men's squad looking for their first win of the season.  The game was hotly contested throughout, but Philadelphia pulled ahead in the end and won by five, 74-69.

Philadelphia improves to 3-1 with the win while Mercy drops to 0-3 on the season.

Despite the loss, Mercy enjoyed a historic highlight as senior forward Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn.) exploded for a triple-double with 26 points, 14 rebounds and 10 steals.

The Mavericks forced an incredible 28 turnovers but also gave up 28 free throws while earning only seven themselves.  They also controlled the pace of play, attempting 25 more shots than the Rams but converting only 37 percent and were outrebounded, 55-43. 

Philadelphia jumped out to an early lead at 8-2 but Mercy scored 10 straight to take the lead and the teams traded baskets until 8:28 in the half as the Rams took the lead on a 6-0 run and carried it into the half up three.

Mercy regained the lead shortly after the break and again traded off with Philadelphia through the first 10 minutes before the Rams scored another seven unanswered points to pull ahead by 10.  The Mavericks cut the lead back to five on multiple occasions but never got within a basket as the Rams hit 10 free throws on 12 attempts over the final three minutes.

Senior guard Stephanie Agger (Wildwood Crest, N.J.) led the Rams with 19 points and senior center Christine Wooding (Northfield, N.J.) scored 16 while pulling down 16 rebounds for the double-double and blocked five shots.  Senior forward Taylor Peltzer (Holland, Pa.) and junior forward Kristen Blye (Chester Springs, Pa.) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Philadelphia, netting 16 and 13, respectively, and freshman guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the only other player to top one point, scoring nine.

Senior forward Talia Beaulieu (Ozone Park, N.Y.) also posted a double-double, scoring 10 and grabbing 10 boards, and was the only Maverick to make a trip to the charity stripe, going 4-7 at the line.  Senior point guard Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md.) scored 14 points and dished out a team-high six assists, but struggled with ball control and committed 10 turnovers.  Sophomore guard Venesha Hunter (Paterson, N.J.) added five assists.  Junior guard Jessica Biggs (Nanuet, N.Y.) hit the Mavericks' only three-pointer as Mercy went 1-8 from behind the arc.

Head Coach Kelli Dunlay and the Mavericks will return to action on Tuesday when they host Georgian Court University () at 5:30 p.m.
