PETERSBURG, VA. (Nov. 25, 2011) – On Friday night the Mercy College women's basketball team faced off against Virginia State University still looking for their first win of the young season, but a slow start put the Mavericks down by too much to overcome and they fell to the Trojans, 71-52.

Virginia State improves to 3-3 on the season, while Mercy drops to 0-5.

The Trojans put the game out of reach early on, scoring 15 unanswered points over an eight-minute span shortly after the start of the first half and adding another eight straight following a Mavericks rally to cut the deficit back to single digits. Mercy went into the break down 12 and the second half was more of the same as the Trojans extended their lead past 20 and ultimately won by 19.

The Mavericks struggled shooting again, hitting only one three-pointer and going 11-24 from the free throw line.

Senior forward Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn.) led the Mavericks with 15 points as she hit seven of her 11 field goals attempts and senior point guard Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md.) added 12 points and led the team with eight rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Aysha Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y.) scored eight points and grabbed six boards while junior forward MarQuesha Moore (Bryans Road, Md.) matched both totals in limited action as she fouled out for the second consecutive game.

Junior Quiana Kizer led the game with 18 points and nine rebounds and LaMesha Deal added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Trojans.

Head Coach Kelli Dunlay and the Mavericks will stay in Petersburg, Va. to take on Elizabeth City State University (2-2) at 2:00 p.m. as part of the VSU Thanksgiving Classic. Livestats and Audio feeds will be available on the women's basketball schedule page.
