Men's Basketball Edged By ECC-Opponent Bridgeport, 66-57; Smith Contributes Double-Double
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Dec. 17, 2011) – On Saturday afternoon, the Mercy College men's basketball team received terrific performances out of junior guard Colin Senior (Hackensack, N.J.), who scored a game-high 17 points, and junior forward LeBrandon Smith (Jamaica, N.Y.), who recorded a double-double, but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks fell to East Coast Conference-opponent the University of Bridgeport, 66-57, at Hubbell Gym in Bridgeport, Conn.
Mercy (1-9, 0-2 ECC) led 30-28 at halftime. The game started off with six consecutive Bridgeport (5-5, 2-0 ECC) points, which was followed by nine unanswered Mercy points. That burst was kicked off with Senior nailing a three-pointer.
The second half started out similar to the first, but turned in favor of the Purple Knights after five minutes. At the 16:08 mark, Mavericks' sophomore guard Romaine Wall (Hackensack, N.J.) hit a jumper, which cut Mercy's deficit to 38-34.
Bridgeport than went on an 11-5 run to go ahead by 10 points (49-39) with 10:55 left in regulation. Within the final 53 seconds of the game, Senior and sophomore guard Chaz Morrish (Douglaston, N.Y.) hit a trey each, but the Purple Knights still had enough of a cushion to earn the 66-57 victory.
For the Mavericks, Senior tied for the game-high with 17 points, while Smith had a game-high 14 boards and netted 10 points for a double-double. Morrish added 13 points, while junior forward Joseph Pope (Akron, Ohio) had 10 off the bench.
For the Purple Knights, junior guard Darian David (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 17 points, while junior guard Hakeem Rodriguez (Queensbridge, N.Y.) and senior forward Eion Lewis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed 14 and 12, respectively. Lewis had 12 rebounds for a double-double.
Following Christmas, Head Coach Adam Parmenter and his club returns to the court on Friday, December 30 when they host Ohio Dominican University (2-8, 0-6). The opening tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
