Men's Basketball Defeats Nearby-Rival Nyack, 84-67
NYACK, N.Y. (Dec. 3, 2011) – The Mercy College men's basketball squad picked up its first victory of the 2011-12 campaign with an 84-67 win over nearby Nyack College on Saturday night. Leading the contest with 25 points was Mavericks' junior guard Colin Senior (Hackensack, N.J.), while junior forward LeBrandon Smith (Jamaica, N.Y.) added 16.
Halfway through the first half, the two sides were tied at 14-all. Mercy (1-5) then reeled off a 9-1 run to take a 23-15 lead with 7:03 remaining.
Over the next five minutes, the Warriors (0-8) whittled down Mercy's lead to four points. The Mavericks, however, posted six consecutive points to grab a 34-24 advantage as they headed into halftime.
Mercy controlled the entire second half of the contest; the Mavericks largest lead of the game came at 16:09 left when they went up by 18 points (46-28) off a three-pointer by Senior. Mercy went on to cruise to the 84-67 triumph.
In addition to Senior's and Smith's big nights in the scoring department, the latter racked up 12 rebounds for the double-double. Sophomore guard Chaz Morrish (Douglaston, N.Y.) contributed nine points and three steals.
Nyack had four Warriors who scored in double-digits.
Head Coach Adam Parmenter and the Mavericks return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 7 when they travel to Long Island and open up East Coast Conference play against Molloy College. The opening tipoff is slated for 8:00 p.m., following the women's contest.
