Senior Ashley Borofsky poured in 20 points, but it was not enough, as the Mercy College women's basketball team fell at East Coast Conference foe Queens (N.Y.) College 77-62 on Saturday evening. The battle was important for playoff seeding, as Queens remains in fifth place, just a half game out of fourth place, while Mercy is four games away from the final spot in the ECC Championships, with just four games to play.

Mercy (5-17; 3-14 ECC) got off to a hot start, and built a 19-12 lead with 13:17 to play in the first half. The host Knights (10-14; 9-8 ECC) responded with a 14-0 run over the next four minutes, and built a seven point lead. Minutes later, Borofsky (Southington, Conn./Southington) was responsible for six consecutive points, and Mercy trailed 29-27. On the ensuing possession, Borofsky's steal led to a jumper by junior Crasheena Ward (Danbury, Conn./Danbury), and the score was tied at 29. The half remained nip-and-tuck, with Queens holding a 42-38 lead at the break.

As the second half started, Mercy quickly tied the score again, this time on the heels of a pair of MarQuesh Moore (Bryans Road, Md./Lackey) free throws. With 16:33 to go, the score was 16 points apiece. Then, Amanda Bartlett took over. The Queens junior scored nine points in an 11-0 run, and the Knights were suddenly in control of the game.

A Mercy timeout was followed by two baskets from junior Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md./Lackey) and one by  Borofsky. Mercy's defense tightened up, holding Queens scoreless for three and a half minutes. Moore made another free throw, and with 8:19 to go, Mercy trailed by five, 58-53.

A 14-1 run for Queens ensued, and Mercy never recovered. The lead was as large as 19 at one point, and Mercy lost by 15.

Nine different players scored for Mercy, led by Borofsky. Her 20 points came with eight rebounds, and four steals. Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) had 11 points, and Simone Williams had nine.

Mercy takes the hardwood again on Wednesday, February 16, as Mercy celebrates Pink Week, hosting St. Thomas Aquinas. The week-long celebration culminates on Saturday, February 19, with the annual WBCA PinkZone! game against Molloy.
