Mercy Women's Basketball Drops Home Game to ECC Leading STAC 84-66
A double-double from Simone Williams and 17 points from Ashley
Borofsky were not enough, and the Mercy College women's
basketball team lost to East Coast Conference leading St. Thomas
Aquinas College 84-66.
STAC, who is ranked ninth in the NCAA's East Region with
an 18-7 record, sits atop the ECC at 14-4. Mercy, 5-18 overall and
3-15 in the ECC, has now officially been eliminated from
post-season contention.
The Mavericks jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, on a Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn./Greens Farms
Academy) layup and a three-pointer from senior
Ashley Borofsky (Southington,
Conn./Southington). The Spartans, after turning the
ball over on their first two possessions, finally found twine, and
rattled off seven consecutive points to take an early 7-5 lead. It
was the last time Mercy would play with the lead.
Slowly, the lead increased, but with 14:13 to play in the first
half,
junior Simone Williams (Waldorf,Md./Lackey)
made the front end of a pair of free throws, and the score was tied
at 11 points apiece. A 7-2 run for STAC followed, keyed by four of
Briana Sloper's 20 points. A three pointer from freshman
Alexis Monserrate (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust
Valley) trimmed the lead back to two, before a 6-0 run
for the Spartans gave the visitors an eight point lead with 10:31
to play. STAC would outscore Mercy for the rest of the half, and
held its largest lead of the half, 11 points, heading into
intermission.
In the second half, the lead never fell lower than double
digits.
For the game, Simone Williams hit for 12 points, ten rebounds,
and eight assists. Jasmine Williams just missed her double-double,
compiling 12 points and nine caroms. Borofsky's 17 led Mercy.
STAC's Shpresa Liharevic led all scorers with a game-high 25
points. Sloper hit for 20 points while grabbing 11 rebounds, as
Theresa Dowling recorded 18 points and nine rebounds.
Mercy hosts Molloy on Saturday, February 19, as the Mavericks
celebrate the WBCA's Pink Zone. The event will raise
funds and awareness for breast cancer research. Tipoff is at 1:00
p.m.
Additionally, a pre-game ceremony will mark a career milestone
for Borofsky, who recorded her 1,000th career point
against Bridgeport a week ago.
