For the second time in as many seasons, the Mercy College men's lacrosse team won the season opener by one goal, defeating St. Anselm on Saturday 7-6. Mercy jumped out to a 6-1 lead, and held off a late charge by St. Anselm.

Sophomore John Lionetti (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) won the game's opening faceoff cleanly for Mercy. Just 43 seconds after the initial whistle, freshman Quadear Mike (Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) scored his first collegiate goal. Minutes later, classmate Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic) scored the first of his two goals on the day, taking a pass from sophomore John Fitzpatrick (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland). Junior Craig Blom (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) scored, unassisted, and the Mavericks led 3-0, with 5:43 to play. St. A's Daniel Sullivan scored a man-up goal with 4:03 to play, and the lead was cut to 3-1. Freshman Pat Hodapp (Oak Ridge, N.Y./Jefferson) scored Mercy's fourth goal, and the Mavericks led 4-1 after the first quarter.

In the second, junior Sal Spinelli (East Islip, N.Y./Suffolk CC) and Wood scored back-to-back to extend the lead to 6-1. Tim Glynn then scored the first of his three goals for the Hawks, and the score was 6-2 at the half.

In the second half, St. Anselm came alive. Andrew Messner scored the only goal of the third quarter, cutting the lead to 6-3. In the fourth, a pair of Hawk goals early made the game 6-5 with 7:27 to play. The eventual game-winning goal came at the 3:42 mark for Mercy, as Fitzpatrick fed sophomore Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) for the goal.

In the game's wining moments, Glynn scored for St. A's with 28 seconds to go. The Hawks won the ensuing faceoff, and called timeout with 18 seconds to play. The Hawks plan of action was thwarted by sophomore Mike Munch (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon), who played solid defense, and held the visitors shotless.

In goal, sophomore T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) played exceptionally well, making four of his 12 saves in the fourth quarter.

For the game, Wood led Mercy with a pair of goals and an assist. Marzocca added one goal and one assist, while Fitzpatrick added two assists. For the Hawks, Glynn had three goals, while Ryan Henry added a pair of helpers.

The Mavericks play again on Wednesday, March 2, hosting NYIT in the East Coast Conference opener. NYIT is currently ranked fifth in the USILA Division II Preseason Poll.
