Mercy Women's Basketball Falls on Senior Day
The Mercy women's basketball team lost their final outing
of the season to East Coast Conference opponent Dowling College,
79-69. With the loss, the Mavericks finish the season 6-20
overall, including 4-17 in the ECC, and Dowling concludes with a
17-11 overall record, including 15-6 in the ECC.
Prior to the game, Mercy honored three student-athletes as part
of Senior Day. They were Ashley
Borofsky (Southington, Conn./Southington), Courtney Cochran
(Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth), and Samantha
DeVore (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy).
Additionally, Borofsky was honored for recently reaching the 1,000
career point milestone.
In the first half, play was tight from the start, with the
visitors striking first. Mercy answered back, and eventually
took the 7-5 lead off a three-pointer by Borofsky, assisted by Simone Williams (Waldorf,
Md./Lackey). Play was tight and baskets were
exchanged. Ignited by a layup by Sarah Schicher which knotted
the game at 30, the Golden Lions would go on a run and take the
41-36 lead into the break.
Mercy came out strong to start the second half, pushing back on
the Dowling lead. A six point run including baskets by
Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn./Green Farms
Academy) and Simone Williams tied the score at 46, but
the Golden Lions would score on the next possession and hold the
advantage the rest of the way. Dowling, who led by as many as
14 in the half, would take the game 79-69.
Borofsky led all players with 23 points and tied for the game
high in rebounds, with eight boards. Simone Williams had 11
points and grabbed six rebounds with four assists. MarQuesha Moore (Bryans Road, Md./Lackey)
added ten points with five boards. Dowling was led by Kelly
Puwalski and Schicher, who each had 16 points for the Golden
Lions.
