The Mercy College baseball team began the 2011 season with a doubleheader split at Adelphi University, dropping the first game 9-0 before taking Game Two 6-2. Today's non-conference games were the season openers for both programs.

In Game One, senior Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) had two of Mercy's five hits. Freshman John Tricario (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) threw the first three innings of the game, and took the loss, giving up four earned runs on four hits.

Game Two was a different story. Mercy scored four runs in the third, and added insurance runs in the fourth and seventh innings for the 6-2 win. Junior Tyler Savin (Wantagh, N.Y./Nassau CC) earned his first win in a Maverick uniform, throwing 3.1 innings, scattering five hits while allowing both Adelphi runs in the fourth inning. Senior Steve Marsar (Seaford, N.Y./Holy Trinity) threw the final 3.2 innings to shut down the Panthers.

In the Mercy fourth inning, four Maverick hits, combined with an Adelphi error, brought home the four runs. Senior Matt Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) had the first RBI single, plating sophomore Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y./Valley Stream North). Walsh then came home and scored an unearned run on a bunt single by senior Julio Torres (Harlingen, Texas/Harlingen South). Torres then came around and scored on a bases loaded walk for freshman Ken Post (Closter, N.J./St. Joseph's).

The first insurance run came as Bock and Walsh hit back-to-back triples in the fourth inning. In the top of the seventh, Walsh's third hit of the game led off the inning. After advancing to third on a single to left by freshman first baseman Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y./Fordham Prep), he scored on a wild pitch.

Walsh finished with three hits, two RBI, and two runs scored.

The Mavericks are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, March 1, facing local rival Pace University. The game will be played at the Silver Lake Complex, in West Harrison, N.Y. First pitch will take place at 2:30 p.m.
