Mavericks Lose Hard Fought Game to Dowling, 66-61
The Mercy men's basketball team dropped a hard fought East
Coast Conference matchup with Dowling College, 66-61. With the
loss, Mercy finishes the season with a 2-24 overall record,
including 2-19 in the ECC, and Dowling finishes 8-18 overall,
including 8-13 in the ECC.
Prior the game Mercy honored four student-athletes as part of
Senior Day. They were Orlando
Daniel (Brodgeport, Conn./Kolbe Cathedral), Manny Garcia (Bronx,
N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), Hasan
Powell (Bridgeport, Conn./Central), and
Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr.
Scanlan). Additionally, Wilson was honored for
recently achieving the 1,000 career point milestone.
In the first half, Garcia got the scoring going knocking down a
jumper despite being fouled. He went to the line to complete
the three-point play. Dowling started scoring as well and
Mercy took its largest lead of the game when a three-pointer by
Colin Senior (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack)
gave the Mavericks the 10-4 advantage. The Golden Lions then
went on an eight point run to take the 12-10 lead. Play was
tight the rest of the half, with Dowling taking the 28-25 lead
going into the break.
The Golden Lions came out strong in the second half. A
free throw by Sean Smith brought the score to 34-25, with Dowling
holding the nine point advantage. Mercy pushed back, and went
on a 10-0 run ignited by a three-pointer by Senior, to take the
lead 35-34.
The lead would be exchanged several times. With the score
knotted at 48 with under eight minutes to play, a series of missed
shots by the Mavericks allowed Dowling to score six straight points
and take the 54-48 lead. Two made free throws by Powell would
put the Mavericks within three points with less than two minutes
remaining, but Mercy would never get closer. Dowling would go
on to take the game, 66-61.
For the Mavericks, Senior tied for the game high with 19 points,
and grabbed six rebounds. Garcia added ten points.
Dowling's Michael Hill had the game's only
double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds, and John Merchant had
17 points.
