Mavericks' Run Not Enough in 95-89 Loss to C. W. Post
In spite of strong shooting, Mercy men's basketball
dropped their match today to East Coast Conference leading C.W.
Post, 95-89. The Mavericks fall to 1-19, including 1-14 ECC,
and the Pioneers climb to 15-7, including 12-3 ECC.
Down by two points with less than 30 seconds to play, Mercy had
an opportunity to at least tie the score, but could not find the
bottom of the net. C.W. Post made five of six free throws in the
last 37 seconds of the game to hold on for the win.
The Mavericks, who shot 50.7% for the game, including 55.6% from
three-point range, led by as many as ten in the second half.
A dunk by the Pioneers' Stefan Bonneau started the scoring
of the first half. He would lead all players with 24 points.
A layup by Tobin Carberry put C.W. Post up 19-12, given the visitor
its largest lead of the half.
Mercy answered back, chipping away at the Pioneers' lead.
A three-pointer by sophomore Colin
Senior (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) gave the
Mavericks the 30-28 lead. For the first stanza, Senior would
go shoot a perfect 100% from the floor, making all five shots he
took, including three from behind the arc. Mercy would finish
the half trailing C.W. Post by only two, 50-48.
In the second half, a layup by Jonathan Kohler gave the Pioneers
the 56-51 lead. Then control shifted in Mercy's
favor. A 13-2 run by the Mavericks, highlighted by scoring by
seniors Manny Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal
Spellman), Hasan
Powell (Bridgeport, Conn./Central), and Ed Wilson
(Bronx, N.Y./Monsignor Scanlan), brought the score to
76-66 and gave Mercy the double digit lead.
The Mavericks would be unable to keep control of the game and
the Pioneers began chipping away. A layup with 1:15 remaining
by C.W. Post's Kohler brought the score to 90-89 with the
Pioneers holding the advantage. Mercy would be unable to
score again, and C.W. Post would take the game 95-89.
The Mavericks were led in scoring by Garcia's 23
points. He also had five assists and five rebounds.
Senior would finish with 19 points, including a perfect 5-5 from
three-point range. He also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Wilson added 17 points, and Powell chipped in 14 points and six
assists.
For the game, Mercy had 17 assists on 35 baskets, led by
Powell's six and Garcia's five. The Pioneers held a
distinctive advantage from the free throw line, converting 27 of 36
attempts. By contrast, Mercy only went to the line ten times,
knocking down nine shots.
C.W. Post had three players score 20 points or more, led by
Stefan Bonneau's 24.
Prior to today's game, Mercy honored its past with the
annual Alumni Basketball Game. Several alums were in attendance,
including Hall of Famer Bob Crescenzo ('82), Greg Longworth
('80), Sam Riti ('77), and Ralph Smith ('76).
Mercy now takes to the road for the next week, travelling to
Bridgeport on Wednesday, February 9, and Queens College on
Saturday, February 12.
