Borofsky Eclipses 1,000 Point Mark as Mercy Women's Basketball Falls
The Mercy College women's basketball team lost a tough East Coast Conference battle at the University of Bridgeport, 91-65. Senior Ashley Borofsky set a personal mark, eclipsing the 1,000 point plateau early in the game.
Mercy (5-16; 3-13 ECC) jumped out to an early 4-2 in
the game's infancy, as juniors Crasheena Ward (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) and Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) each made baskets. The host Purple Knights (12-11; 10-6 ECC) then went on an 11-0 run, which spurred a Mercy timeout. The Mavericks responded, and rallied to cut the lead to just six points, 17-11, at the 12:05 mark. This prompted a UB timeout.
Momentum then swung back to UB. Back-to-back three pointers for Bridgeport extended the lead to 12 points before junior Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md./Lackey) was able to score again for Mercy. Undeterred, UB proceeded to go on an 8-0 run, and led 31-13 with 8:40 to play. Mercy responded with an 8-0 run, where Mercy College history was made.
At the 7:51 mark, Ashley Borofsky (Southington, Conn./Southington) connected on a three-pointer, giving her 1,001 points for her career. She finished the game with 1,027 career points.
Later in the half, an 11-0 run for UB extended the lead, and, at the half, Mercy trailed 52-32.
UB led by as many as 30 points midway through the second half.
For the game, Mercy turned the ball over 22 times, often leading to easy points for Bridgeport.
Borofsky went for 31 points in the game, the highest total in a game so far this season. Her total included nine three-pointers. She added four assists and four steals. Jasmine Williams added 11, while Ward had 10. For UB, Division I-transfer Kelly Keil scored 23 points.
Mercy continues the road trip with a Saturday matinee, at Queens College on February 12.
