Setters Nine Saddle Mavericks with 8-1 Loss
The Mercy College (1-2; 0- ECC) baseball team managed just four
hits against Pace University on Tuesday, losing 8-1 in the process.
The game, in which Pace (3-0; 0-0 Northeast-10) was the home team,
was played in West Harrison, N.Y., at Passidomo Park.
Pace jumped out early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the
first off of Mercy starter Keith Kreig
(Bronx, N.Y./Mt. St. Michael), who took his first loss
of the year. After getting the first batters out, the next five
batters all reached base for the Setters. The big play in the
inning came when freshman catcher John Casten
(Valley Central, N.Y./Valley Central) fielded the ball
in front of the plate, and promptly launched the ball into right
field. Senior Brian Kraminitz had a two-run single in the inning as
well.
The Mavericks' sole run came in the top of the sixth, as
freshman Anthony Simon (Suffern,
N.Y./Sloatsburg) tripled down the right field line to
open the inning. The next batter was senior Graig
Lauricella (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge), who
singled him home.
Pace sophomore pitcher Brian Sunberg earned his first win of the
year, hurling five innings of shutout ball, allowing one hit,
walking four, and striking out four.
Mercy is off for the next few days before hosting Franklin
Pierce University on Friday, March 4, for a doubleheader in
Chester, N.Y.
