#10 Mercy Men's Lacrosse Beats AIC 10-7
The Mercy College men's lacrosse team, ranked #10 in
Division II by the USILA, ran its record to a perfect 4-0 by
defeating visiting American International College, 10-7. Sean
Wallin and Mike Marzocca each had three goals to lead the way.
Mercy jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, and never
trailed.
Sophomore John Fitzpatrick (Yorktown,
N.Y./Lakeland) led off the scoring just three and a
half minutes into the game. Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./North
Babylon) scored an unassisted man-down goal before Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain
Lakes) ran the lead to 3-0. Alex Casparius scored for
AIC, and the Mavericks led 3-1 after 15 minutes.
Casparius opened the second stanza with an unassisted goal, and
the Yellowjackets were right in the game, down 3-2. But four
consecutive goals from Mercy, including back-to-back tallies from
junior Sal Spinelli (East Islip, N.Y./East
Islip), put Mercy up comfortably, 7-2, at the
half.
The Yellowjackets played hard and stayed in the game, trimming
the lead to 9-5 after three periods.
In the fourth quarter, Wallin scored his third goal of the game,
giving Mercy more than enough of a cushion. A pair of late goals
for AIC ended the game with a 10-7 score.
Mercy controlled the pace of the game, peppering the AIC
goalkeepers with 49 shots. Possession was key for Mercy, as the
Mavericks won 16 of the 21 faceoffs in the game.
In addition to Wallin and Marzocca, goals came from Spinelli
with two, Fitzpatrick and Craig
Blom (Port Jefferson Station,
N.Y./Comsewogue) each with one. Freshman Jesse
Wood (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic) added three
assists.
In goal, sophomore T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale,
N.Y./Farmingdale) made eight stops for Mercy.
The Mavericks return to action on Wednesday, March 16, hosting
Franklin Pierce. The scheduled contest against East Coast
Conference rival Molloy, slated for Sunday, March 13, has been
postponed due to poor field conditions. No makeup date has been
set.
