The Mercy College softball team split a doubleheader with Holy Family University on Saturday in dramatic fashion. Game One saw a six-run eighth inning rally propel the Mavericks to a 14-9 win, while Game Two saw Mercy outhit the hosts, only to fall 3-0. The non-conference games were played in Philadelphia, Penn.

Game One was a wild affair. Mercy (4-7) scored four runs in the top of the first, only to yield three runs in the bottom of the second. In all, Mercy scored in four of the eight innings, while HFU (2-10) scored in six different frames. Interestingly, ten of Mercy's eleven base hits were singles.

Senior Chelsea Methot (Bristol, Conn./Central) continued to hit the ball well, banging three hits, including her fifth homerun of the season. In all, she drove in seven runs. Senior Krissy Lacik (Edison, N.Y./Edison) scored each of the three times she reached base. Additionally, freshman Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) scored thrice, while driving in two.

In the circle, freshman Tayla Gardner (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) got hit hard in her six innings. Classmate Mary Sieber (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), who threw the eighth inning, claimed the win.

In Game Two, Mercy had base runners in every inning but the sixth, but could not find a clutch hit. The Mavericks scattered seven base hits and had four runners walk – eleven base runners in total.

The first great opportunity for Mercy to score was in the top of the second. The bases were loaded with only one out, but two straight line outs ended the threat. Again in the fifth frame, the Mavericks had two runners on with only one out, and still could not push a run across.

Sieber started this game, and got a no decision after throwing four innings of shutout ball. Bentson threw a shutout fifth before giving up three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the loss. Methot reached base three times on two singles and a walk, while Cristina Lisboa (Bronx, N.Y./St. Catherine's) had a pair of hits, including a double.

The Mavericks continue their two-date, four game road trip, with a pair of games at Goldey-Beacom College in Delaware on Sunday.
