Greyhounds Run to 12-9 Women's Lacrosse Win over Mercy
The Mercy College women's lacrosse team (4-2) could not
hold an early lead, and lost to visiting Assumption (Mass.) College
today, 12-9, in a game played in Purchase, N.Y.
Early in the game, both teams played well. Mercy held a 3-2 lead
on back-to-back goals from freshmen Kelsey Bub (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter
Panas) and Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station,
N.Y./Comsewogue). The Greyhounds (2-1) then went
running, scoring the final five goals of the first half to take a
7-3 lead at the break.
For the first half, Mercy turned the ball over 16 times, leading
to increased pressure on the Maverick defense.
In the second half, Assumption scored a pair of quick goals,
upping the lead to 9-3. Assumption would eventually lead 12-5
before Mercy rallied. Bub would score three of her game-high four
goals late in the second half, but it was not enough.
In goal, Mercy sophomore Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay
Shore) played extremely well, making 18 saves on 41
shots. For Assumption, Michelle Monahan made 12 saves.
Joining Bub with four points for the game was Znaniecki, who had
three goals and one assist.
After a 3-0 start, Mercy has now dropped two of its last three
games. Up next for the Mavericks is a Tuesday, March 22 trip to
Kutztown (Pa.).
