Mercy Softball Sweeps Goldey-Beacom College, 6-1 and 11-1
The Mercy College softball team has now won four of its last
five games, sweeping a doubleheader today at Goldey-Beacom College,
6-1 and 11-1, in games played in Wilmington, Del. Mercy improves to
6-7 on the nascent season, while GBC is now 5-3.
Game One was a lot closer than the score indicates. Each team
scratched a run across in the first, then Mercy got a single
insurance run in the fourth. A four-run sixth inning broke the game
open for Mercy, who had the first five batters in the inning
single. The key hit came off the bat of freshman Kelly Bentson (Brewster,
N.Y./Brewster), who drove home two runs. Freshman
pitcher Mary Sieber (Massapequa,
N.Y./Massapequa) went the distance, scattering three
hits while striking out three.
In Game Two, Mercy scored early and often, invoking the ten-run
rule after just five innings of play. Three senior led the
offensive onslaught, led by Paige Cauley (Stratford,
N.J./Sterling) with four hits in as many at bats,
including a double, and four runs scored. Kim
Curry (Bristol, Conn./Central) had three hits in three
official plate appearances, walking once. She drove in four runs
and scored twice. Alicia Martin (Massapequa,
N.Y./Massapequa) had three hits as well, driving in
three runners. In all, Mercy had 16 hits in the five-inning game.
Freshman Tayla Gardner (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan
Zee) was the beneficiary of the run support, allowing
just the one earned run on three hits. She fanned fix and walked
none.
The Mavericks will begin play in the East Coast Conference this
week, hosting Molloy College on Thursday for a doubleheader.
