Mercy Softball Drops ECC Doubleheader to Molloy
The Mercy College softball team dropped a pair of East Coast
Conference games to Molloy College on Saturday, 6-5 and 4-2. Mercy,
who had not played in six days, drops to 6-9 on the season,
including 0-2 in the ECC, while Molloy is 13-5, and 2-0 in the
ECC.
Game One needed an extra inning to decide the outcome. The
Mavericks scored three in the top of the sixth, only to have the
hosts respond with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to
knot the score at 5-5. Neither team scored in the seventh, and,
with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Molloy scratched across
a run for the walk-off win. Freshman Brittany Serrao (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany)
took the loss, going the final 2.2 innings in relief of classmate
Mary Sieber (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa).
Senior Stephanie
Owsiany (Edison, N.J./Edison) had a two-RBI single in
the sixth, after classmate Chelsea
Methot (Bristol, Conn./Central) had hit a solo homerun
in the fourth.
Methot now has six homeruns in 15 games to lead the
Mavericks.
In Game Two, Molloy scored a pair of runs in the first inning,
and held on for the 4-2 win. Mercy got one run in the fourth, and
another in the top of the seventh. Freshman Tayla
Gardner (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) threw six strong
innings, yielding four runs on seven hits.
In the fourth frame, junior Rachel
Poccia (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) reached on an
error, then stole second and third, before scoring on a Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande)
sacrifice fly.
Down 4-1 heading into the seventh, the first three batters in
the inning all collected base hits, with Ausiello scoring. But
Molloy's Megan Butterworth was able to lock down the
Mavericks and get the win.
Mercy is scheduled to return to play on Tuesday, March 29, with
a doubleheader at Dowling College.
