Mercy Women's Lacrosse Dominates STAC, 19-5
With goals coming from nine different players, the Mercy College
women's lacrosse team (5-3, 1-0 East Coast Conference)
handedly defeated St. Thomas Aquinas College (1-3, 0-1 ECC) today
19-5, in what was the first Conference matchup of the season for
both programs.
The Spartans got on the board first, when an unassisted goal by
Johannah Mitchell, less than two minutes into the game, gave STAC
the early lead. Mercy answered with goals from sophomore
Julie Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and
classmate Marissa
Hurley (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd), putting the
Mavericks up by one. STAC's Anne Buttafuoco tied the
game roughly one minute later.
Mercy then went on a run, scoring eight straight
unanswered goals, highlighted by three in a row by Hurley.
The Spartans would score one, but the Mavericks would answer with
two more, to hold the 12-3 lead at the break.
In the second half, Mercy continued to dominate play, outscoring
the Spartans 7-2. The Mavericks would go on to take the game
19-5.
Mercy was led by Hurley, who had six goals and two assists on
the day. Freshman Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky
Point) had four goals and two assists. Darnulc
and freshman Kelsey Bub (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter
Panas) each added a pair of goals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore)
made ten saves for the Mavericks.
The Spartans were led by Mitchell, who scored twice.
Mercy returns to action when Queens College travels to Dobbs
Ferry on Friday, April 1.
