Mercy College began its Florida trip with a pair of games on Saturday, March 5. In the season opener, Mercy fell to St. Anselm, 8-4, before rebounding to beat American International, 6-4.

Against the Hawks, freshman Mary Sieber (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) got hit hard in her collegiate opener, allowing six runs on five hits in just one inning pitched. Classmate Brittany Serrao (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) threw the remaining five innings of relief.

Mercy got one run in the third, and three more in the fifth, as senior Kim Curry (Bristol, Conn./Central) singled, senior Paige Cauley (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) tripled, and classmate Chelsea Methot (Bristol, Conn./Central) homered.

Curry finished the game with three hits, an RBI, and run scored. Cauley and Methot each had a pair of hits.

Against AIC, freshman Tayla Garner (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) earned the start, throwing three innings. Classmate Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) entered in the fourth and claimed the win.

The Mavericks scored first, after a single by Paige Cauley, and a three base error for Methot. In the fourth inning, Cauley walked, and came around to score on an RBI triple from junior Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande). AIC answered with a homerun to tie the game 2-2.

The bottom of the sixth was a wild inning. With Mercy down 4-2, Cauley and Methot walked to start the inning. Senior Stephanie Owsiany (Edison, N.J./Edison) reached on an infield single, and Cauley scored on a wild pitch. After an Ausiello base on balls, a Curry sacrifice fly scored Methot. The final blow was a two-RBI single for senior Krissy Lacik (Edison, N.J./Edison).

Cauley was in the middle of the action all game, scoring three times.
