Mercy Women's Lacrosse Outlasts Rain, Lightning, and Queens College, 17-16
The Mercy College women's lacrosse team outlasted rain,
lightning, and the Queens College Knights on Sunday night, 17-16,
in a game played in Purchase, N.Y.
The game is important in the East Coast Conference, as Mercy is
now 3-1 and in third place. Queens is now 0-3 in the ECC.
The game was tightly contested by two strong teams. Freshman Kelsey Bub (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter
Panas) led the game off with a free position goal. But
a run of four consecutive goals put the guests up 4-1. Both teams
swapped goals, until a 4-0 run at the conclusion of the first half
put Mercy up 9-8 at the half. Freshman Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station,
N.Y./Comsewogue) had the first three goals in that
run.
In the second half, Queens' Sarah Boucher scored less than
a minute in to knot the score. The hosts then went on a 5-0 run to
take a 14-9 lead. Later in the half, Bub scored her second goal of
the game to put Mercy up 16-12, before Queens scored four straight.
With just 1:12 to play, the score was tied 16 all.
With just 26 ticks left, sophomore Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport South
Manor) scored on a free position goal to earn the win
for Mercy.
On the game, Sullivan led Mercy with four goals and two assists.
Freshman Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky
Point) had three goals and as many assists, while
Znaniecki finished with three goals and two assists.
The Mavericks (7-4 overall) return to action on Thursday, April
21, at Molloy College.
