Mercy Softball Manages Split With NYIT
It was a wild day for the Mercy College softball team, who
pulled out a split of a doubleheader played at NYIT. Mercy lost
Game One, 11-10, before winning Game Two, 10-1. The Mavericks are
now 7-12 overall, and 1-5 in the East Coast Conference, while NYIT
is 4-13 overall, and 1-3 in the ECC.
Game One was a wild affair, with the hosts plating two runs in
the bottom of the seventh for the win. Mercy scored four times in
the fourth, and four more again in the top of the sixth to take a
10-6 lead. But the Bears got three in the bottom of the sixth,
setting up the last inning heroics.
For Mercy, eight different batters had hits, led by freshman Kelly Bentson (Brewster,
N.Y./Brewster), who had three hits in as many at bats,
including a homerun. She scored twice, and drove in four. Leadoff
hitter Krissy Lacik (Edison, N.J./Edison) had
a pair of hits, but scored three times. Junior Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande/Santa
Rosa JC) had two hits and two RBI, and scored on her
own homerun in the fourth inning.
In the second game, the hot bats of the Mavericks continued to
pound the ball, knocking 11 hits in just five innings. Senior
centerfielder Chelsea Methot (Bristol, Conn./Bristol
Central) had three hits, including a leadoff homerun
in the second. Ausiello had two more hits, including a double.
Freshman Tayla Gardner (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan
Zee) was the beneficiary of the run support, gaining
the win. She gave up just two hits and one run, striking out
six.
The Mavericks continue the road trip with a doubleheader set for
Tuesday at C.W. Post.
