Mercy Softball Upsets #8 Dowling in Walk Off Fashion
A walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game
Two allowed the Mercy College softball team to split a doubleheader
with #8 Dowling College on Thursday. Dowling (33-4; 19-1 East Coast
Conference) won the opener, 8-2, before the miracle Mavericks
(15-18; 9-11 ECC) claimed the second game, 2-1.
In the second game, senior Alicia Martin (Massapequa,
N.Y./Massapequa) doubled to right center, sending
sophomore Natalie Wabshinak (New Fairfield, Conn./New
Fairfield) home from first base with two outs in the
bottom of the seventh. Earlier in the game, junior Jenna
Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande/Santa Rosa JC)
homered to left in the fourth inning to tie the score. Freshman Mary Sieber (Massapequa,
N.Y./Massapequa) went the distance in the circle to
earn the win, scattering seven hits while allowing just one
run.
In Game One, Dowling held a 6-0 lead before the Mavericks plated
two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ausiello and Chelsea Methot (Bristol,
Conn./Central) scored those runs for Mercy.
The Mavericks will return to action tomorrow, Friday, hosting C.
W. Post at 1:00 p.m. for a doubleheader. The games were moved up a
day from Saturday, in anticipation of inclement weather over the
weekend.
