Mercy Softball Splits Games With National Power, C.W. Post
For the second consecutive day, the Mercy College softball program managed to split a doubleheader with a national power, this time losing Game One to C. W. Post, 4-2, before rebounding to take Game Two, 3-2. The Pioneers are receiving votes in the latest NFCA Poll.
Mercy (16-19; 10-12 ECC) has now won four of its last six games in the league, solidifying fourth place in the East Coast Conference.
In Game One, the Pioneers (31-9; 17-5 ECC) got a run in the third, another in the fifth, and two more in the top of the seventh to take the 4-0 lead. In the bottom of that frame, Mercy scored two, and had the potential game-tying run in scoring position, but could not capitalize. Freshman pitcher Tayla Gardner (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) had a two-RBI double with the bases loaded to plate the Mavericks' runs. Gardner pitched the complete game, striking out six.
In the second game, C.W. Post scored in the top of the first, only to have Mercy's Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) hit her fourth homerun of the year, a solo shot, to tie the score in the bottom of the inning.
In the second inning, sophomore catcher Cristina Lisboa (Bronx, N.Y./St. Catherine's) knocked the first homerun of her career, a two-run, shot that also scored senior Chelsea Methot (Bristol, Conn./Central).
The Pioneers scored again in the fourth inning to make the game interesting, but Mercy would snap C.W. Post's win streak at 13 games with the 3-2 win. Freshman Mary Sieber (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) threw the complete game to earn the win, fanning five while allowing just the two earned runs.
Mercy has a short break before hosting Bridgeport on Tuesday, April 26, at 3:00 p.m.
