Mavericks Softball Crushes Bridgeport, 7-3 and 10-4
The Mercy College softball team swept a doubleheader from the
University of Bridgeport on Tuesday, winning 7-3 and 10-4. The
Mavericks are 18-19 on the year, and 12-12 in the East Coast
Conference, while UB is 7-29 and 2-20.
In the opener, Mercy pushed across single runs in the third and
fourth innings, before a four-spot in the fifth sealed the game.
Freshman Tayla Gardner (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan
Zee) scattered six hits in seven innings, allowing
three earned runs, all coming in the sixth and seventh innings.
Freshman Kelly Bentson (Brewster,
N.Y./Brewster) had a pair of hits and as many runs
scored. Sophomore Natalie Wabshinak (New Fairfield, Conn./New
Fairfield) also had two hits, with two RBI and one run
scored. She belted the first homerun of her career in the sixth
inning, a solo shot to left field.
Game Two was a tight affair as well, despite the final score.
Mercy led 2-0 after five innings, before a wild sixth inning. In
that frame, UB scored four runs in the top half, only to have the
Mavericks score eight times in the bottom of the inning.
For the game, Bentson continued her torrid pace, with three more
hits, scoring twice. Senior Chelsea Methot (Bristol,
Conn./Central) had three hits, including two doubles,
with four RBI. Classmate Paige Cauley (Stratford,
N.J./Sterling) went deep in the sixth, a three-run
bomb to left. Freshman Brittany Serrao (Parsippany,
N.J./Parsippany) earned the win, throwing the final
1.1 innings, in relief of classmate Mary Sieber
(Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), threw well before
running into trouble in the sixth.
The Mavericks have only two more conference doubleheaders
remaining in the regular season. Up next, however, is a
non-conference date with local rival Pace University on Thursday,
April 28. The Mavericks will be celebrating Breast Cancer
Awareness, wearing specially designed pink uniform tops. The games
begin on Smith Field at 2:30 p.m.
