Mercy Softball Splits with STAC as Mavericks Celebrate Strike Out Breast Cancer!
The Mercy College softball team split a doubleheader with St.
Thomas Aquinas ion Friday, taking Game One, 7-0, before losing Game
Two, 3-1. Mercy is now 19-20 overall, but 13-13 and in fourth place
in the East Coast Conference, while STAC is 15-22 overall, and
10-15 in the ECC.
Today, Mercy celebrated Strikeout Breast Cancer!, designed to
raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. The team wore
custom designed pink uniform tops as part of the effort.
In the opener, freshman pitcher Tayla Gardner (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan
Zee) was masterful, scattering four hits in seven
innings. The Mavericks got all the runs they would need in the
first inning off the bat of senior Paige Cauley (Stratford, N.J./Sterling/Iona
College), who belted a three-run homerun.
In the nightcap, the Mavericks had one hit through the first
four innings before finding traction in the fifth. By then, STAC
led 2-0. Seniors Chelsea Methot (Bristol,
Conn./Central) and Krissy Lacik (Edison, N.J./Edison)
each had a pair of hits, as Cauley had the sole RBI.
Mercy had opportunities to win the game in the seventh, with two
runners on base. STAC's Maura Power was able to get out of
the inning, earning the win.
Mercy will host Queens College on Saturday, in a vital
doubleheader that will determine the fourth and final spot in the
ECC Championships. The Mavericks will also be honoring the seven
seniors on the roster with Senior Day. Ceremonies begin at 11:30
a.m.
There has also been one schedule addition, as Mercy will host
Briarcliffe College in a doubleheader on Sunday, May 1.
