Mercy Baseball Rallies for Doubleheader Split with Dowling
The Mercy College baseball team managed a split today, dropping
Game One to Dowling, 10-7, before capturing the night cap, 5-2.
Dowling won the five-game series 4-1.
In Game One, a late Mercy College rally came up short, with the
hosts scoring three times in the bottom of the ninth. Mercy
starter Keith Kreig (Bronx, N.Y./Mt. St.
Michael's) allowed six runs on seven hits
through five innings, talking the loss. Mercy banged out 14 hits on
the day, including three apiece from freshmen Jesus
Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and Ken Post
(Closter, N.J./St. Joseph's). Senior Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, N.Y./Long
Beach) had two hits and two RBI.
Game Two saw junior Billy
Dring (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) threw a complete game
to earn the win. He pitched into and out of trouble throughout the
game, allowing just two runs, while scattering five hits.
Offensively, Mercy scored in four of the first five innings. Senior
Matt Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's
Boys) went three-for-three, with two doubles, two runs
scored, and an RBI. Freshman Anthony Simon (Sloatsburg,
N.Y./Suffern) had no official at bats with three
sacrifice flies, driving home three runs.
Mercy is now 7-12 on the season, and 1-4 in the East Coast
Conference. The Molloy series looms next on the schedule, with the
first game slated for Tuesday evening, April 5, at 6:00 p.m., at
Molloy. Game Two of the series will be on Thursday, April 7, at
Mercy, at 3:30 p.m.
