Mavericks Softball Splits Doubleheader with C. W. Post
The Mercy College softball team split a pair of one-run games with C. W. Post on Wednesday, dropping Game One, 9-8, before taking Game Two, 6-5. C. W. Post is receiving votes in the latest national poll, conducted by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Mercy snapped C. W. Post's win streak at ten games.
In the opener, the Pioneers (18-6, 6-2 East Coast Conference) scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to rally for the win. Mercy scored in five of the seven innings, including one run in the top of the seventh to take a tentative one-run lead.
The Mavericks (8-13, 2-6 ECC) got two solo homeruns in the top of the first, coming off the bats of freshman Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and senior Chelsea Methot (Bristol, Conn./Central). Methot then scored again in the seventh, giving Mercy a temporary lead. For the game, Bentson had two hits and three RBI, scoring twice. Junior Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande/Santa Rosa J.C.) also had a pair of hits, while senior Paige Cauley (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) had one hit and two RBI. Taking the loss was freshman Mary Sieber (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), who entered in the seventh and got only one out before yielding two runs on an Angela Carmine double.
In Game Two, Mercy scored two in the first and two more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Mercy led 6-3 before C. W. Post rallied for a pair of seventh inning runs, which was not enough this time.
Sieber started this time, and threw a complete game, allowing five runs, only three of which were earned, fanning one while walking none. Methot continued her hot hitting, with three hits, including another round tripper, with two RBI and three runs scored. Cauley went yard as well, driving home two, scoring twice.
Interestingly both of Methot's homeruns came in the first inning. The centerfielder has now hit in all 18 games she has played in this season, and her last 20, reaching back into last year.
Mercy, who sits in sixth place in the ECC, will host Bridgeport on Thursday in a doubleheader, held at Purchase College, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
