Mercy Softball Splits at Queens
The Mercy College softball team split a doubleheader at Queens
today, taking Game 1, 2-0, before dropping Game 2, 10-9. The
Mavericks are now 11-14 on the season, and 5-7 in the East Coast
Conference, while Queens is 19-11 overall, and 8-4 in the ECC.
All of Mercy's offense in the opener came via the
longball. Senior Chelsea Methot (Bristol,
Conn./Central) ran her hitting streak to 24
consecutive games, belting a solo shot to center in the second.
Junior Jenna Ausiello (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande/Santa
Rosa JC) then connected for her own solo blast in the
fourth inning. Freshman Tayla Gardner (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan
Zee) earned the win by scattering three hits over
seven innings.
In the second game, Mercy had a 9-5 lead after six and a half
innings, only to watch the hosts plate two in the bottom of the
sixth and three in the bottom of the seventh for the win. Methot
and senior Krissy Lacik (Edison,
N.J./Edison) each had a pair of hits, while Kim
Curry (Bristol, Conn./Central) and Natalie Wabshinak (New Fairfield, Conn./New
Fairfield) each had a pair of RBI.
The Mavericks head to Wilmington (Del.) on Sunday for a
doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
