Field Hockey Falls in Season Opener to Manhattanville, 4-0

RYE, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2011) – On Thursday evening, the Mercy College field hockey team opened up its second year of play against nearby Manhattanville College. Forced to play at the School of the Holy Child in Rye, N.Y. due to damages left by Hurricane Irene, the Mavericks dropped their campaign opener to the Valiants, 4-0. With the win, Manhattanville improved to 1-0 on the year. Following the loss, Mercy fell to 0-1 overall.
Manhattanville sophomore Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) scored the Valiants' first goal in the 28th minute of the game. In the second half, fellow sophomore Megan Greene (Jamestown, R.I.) added a pair of goals, while junior Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa.) had the final tally for the hosts at the 49:56 mark.
For Mercy, freshmen midfielders Kristine Carl (Kingston, N.Y.) and Giana Magosin (West Atlantic City, N.J.) each had a shot on goal.
Between the pipes for the Mavericks, sophomore Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) made nine saves and was strapped with the loss. Valiants sophomore goalkeeper Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up the win and stopped two shots.
Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks continue their season-opening road trip as they travel to Garden City, N.Y. on Saturday to take on Adelphi University. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
