CHEYNEY, PA. (Sept. 10, 2011) – On Saturday afternoon, the Mercy College volleyball team traveled out to Cheyney, Pa. for two matches and came away with 3-0 sweeps in both. Mercy's record is now 3-2.
Mercy 3, Cheyney 0
The Mavericks took the first match with relative ease, posting sets cores of 25-7, 25-6 and 25-13 against Cheyney. Mercy spread its attack out more than it has all season (no player recorded even 10 total attempts) and it paid off. Freshman outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) and sophomore middle hitter Nicole Pepe (East Meadow, N.Y.) led the squad with five kills each.
Mercy sailed to the overwhelming victory thanks largely to its astounding 20 service aces, with freshman setter McKenna Ronan (East Meadow, N.Y.) leading the way with seven, and also leading the team with nine assists. Junior defensive specialist Carolina Abreu (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) saw the most action she has in her three-year career and made use of it, leading the team with seven digs and adding two assists and two aces in three sets played.
Cheyney managed only five kills in the entire match, totaling a -.278 hitting percentage.
Mercy 3, Goldey-Beacom 0
The Goldey-Beacom match took more to win, but the Mavericks still came away with the victory, again sweeping the first three sets, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-20. Mercy centered its attack around its two young outside hitters, White and sophomore Nicolette Gebhardt (Middletown, N.Y.), with the two combining for 23 kills on 63 of the team's 105 attempts.
The Mavericks played more or less without a designated setter, with five players posting at least four assists and none more than six. Freshman defensive specialist Ericka Kane (Glendale, Ariz.) led the team with 13 digs, with freshman setter Michala Askew (Ringgold, Ga.) not far behind at 10.
Mercy totaled an impressive seven blocks in the second match. Junior middle hitter Kassy Phillips (Marcellus, N.Y.), who had posted one solo block in the first match, scored a total of three in the second, leading the team in both.
Goldey-Beacom spread its attack out, with two players recording six kills and three recording four. They weathered Mercy's offensive assault with three double-digit dig totals, led by freshman defensive specialist Niki Receveur (Wilmington, Del.), who had 13.
Head Coach Alan Clements and the Mavericks will remain at home for next weekend's three-game slate, including matchups with Saint Rose on Friday (7:00 p.m. start) and Felician and Saint Anselm on Saturday (12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. starts).
