Men's Soccer Prevails in Overtime, 2-1 Against Felician
Box Score BOXSCORE – Mercy vs. Felician
LODI, N.J. (Sept. 14, 2011) – On Wednesday night, the Mercy College men's soccer team headed out to Lodi, N.J. to take on Felician College in a final tune-up before beginning conference play this weekend. The Mavericks came away with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory, scoring just two minutes into extra time to take the match and improve to 3-1-1 this season while dropping Felician to 2-3.
Felician took control in the first half, getting a goal from graduate student defender Adrian Sutcliffe (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England) to go ahead, and would go on to outshoot Mercy 12-10 for the game, but the Mavericks found an equalizer in just the 49th minute, when senior back Colin Legge (Schodack, N.Y.) set up his classmate, senior midfielder Mark Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.), on a free kick, which Guerrero finished to tie the game.
Neither side tested the keepers much despite the shot totals, with junior Nick Papas (Castleton, N.Y.) and the Felician keeper making only two saves each. As the second half wound down fairly uneventfully, except for a Golden Falcons shot that hit the post in the 81st minute, the prospect of overtime brought no reassurances for either team.
Yet less than two minutes in the Mavericks managed the game winner, as sophomore midfielder Mustaffa Alobeidy (Baghdad, Iraq) scored his first career goal on an assist from senior midfielder Lamine Seck (Bronx, N.Y.).
Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will open conference play at home this Saturday against the University of Bridgeport. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. as the second game of the doubleheader which will also feature the Mercy women's soccer team facing the same opponent.
