Volleyball Drops Match in Three Sets to Saint Rose
Box Score BOXSCORE – Mercy vs. Saint Rose
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2011) – On Friday night, the Mercy College volleyball team welcomed the College of Saint Rose into the Mercy Gymnasium for the first of three matches this weekend. At a severe height disadvantage (the Golden Knights boasted six players at least 6'0" to the Mavericks' none), Mercy put up a fight early in each set but Saint Rose eventually pulled away for the three-set victory.
Mercy had trouble avoiding attack errors early in the first set and scrambled just to get back to a .000 hitting percentage. Saint Rose meanwhile came out firing, smashing .241 and going on to hit .348 and .350 in the final two sets to Mercy's .150 and .042. Along with 10 service aces to the Mavericks' one, the Golden Knights overpowered the home squad with a balanced and effective attack.
Freshman outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) was the only Maverick to reach double digits in kills, smacking 10, while freshman libero Ericka Kane (Glendale, Ariz.) led the team with seven digs, six of which came in the first set.
The Golden Knights were led by sophomore outside hitter Christina Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y.), who posted nine kills, with freshman libero Katy Daniels (South Hadley, Mass.) making a team-high 14 digs. Senior outside hitter Sarah Kahrs (Kings Park, N.Y.) and freshman setter Tori Daniels (South Hadley, Mass.) each had three services aces, while Daniels combined with classmate Ariana Wilson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) for 26 assists.
Head Coach Alan Clements and the Mavericks will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for two matches. They will open the day with a 12:00 p.m. start against Felician College and close it out against Saint Anselm College at 4:00 p.m.
